Hotel Central was built before World War II and it was set partly on the walls of the old monastery. The building was destroyed during the 1944 bombing. The hotel had a nice restaurant where the people of Narva spent their time and partied. The following grain of wisdom related to alcohol consumption was in circulation among ordinary people: "if you have a lot of money, drink only beer, if on average, then vodka. But if you have very little money, buy a bottle of beer and pour lace into vodka!". Drinking wine at that time was considered only a hobby for ladies.
